Sunscreen is a must-have during summer trips, hikes, and other outdoor activities. Among various options like creams and lotions, sunscreen sprays have gained popularity for their convenience and ease of use. But while they’re easy to apply, do you know how to use them safely?
What Is a Sunscreen Spray?
Sunscreen sprays are lightweight and easy to apply evenly, often using alcohol as a solvent or aerosol cans with flammable propellants. Their quick application makes them a popular modern choice.
How to Use Sunscreen Sprays Safely
Choose the Right Product
Pick a gentle, alcohol-free formula if you have sensitive skin.
Do a Patch Test
Apply a small amount behind the ear or on the inner elbow. Wait 24–72 hours to ensure no irritation.
Spray at the Right Distance
Hold the spray 15–20 cm from your skin. For your face or neck, spray on your hand first, then apply. If it gets in your eyes, rinse with water.
Avoid Damaged Skin
Don’t apply to wounds, rashes, or irritated areas.
Avoid Over-Spraying
Don’t spray the same area up close for more than 3 seconds—this may cause cold burns due to rapid cooling.
Use in Well-Ventilated Areas
Don’t spray in small, enclosed spaces like bathrooms or cars. Keep your mouth and nose closed while spraying.
Keep Away from Children
Store out of reach. For kids, use gentle formulas with the “Little Golden Shield” icon indicating it’s suitable for children.
Store Safely
These sprays are flammable. Keep them in cool, dry places away from heat, sunlight, or flames. Never puncture or burn the can.
